Online Maths tutoring with a twist!

As a teacher with 14 years experience, I see this problem play out over and over again. Student struggles with Maths, their parents send them to a tutor, the student’s grades improve so the parents withdraw the tutoring support only for the student’s grades to plummet.
What is happening here is that whilst receiving tutoring, the student is relying on memorising the process as prompted by the tutor on a regular basis. When this support is withdrawn, the student’s grades drop because they weren’t able to retain the process since key, foundational numeracy skills are missing. The student then progresses to the next year level where they continue to struggle, but even more so, as they are still missing the key, foundational numeracy skills that are required to do more complex Maths.
In summary, this means the student is unable to retain what they are being taught in Maths at school because they can’t understand it without the key, foundational numeracy skills. Trying to do Maths without key, foundational numberacy skills is like building a house without a slab, it’s wobbly, unstable and ineffective.
Traditional style tutoring doesn’t address the core issue of why the student doesn’t understand, feels overwhelmed by and struggles with Maths. Traditional style tutoring focuses on helping students with the Maths they are currently working on at school which is why their grades are temporarily inflated. Traditional style tutoring focuses on a desired outcome (improving grades) rather than addressing the core issue, which is that the student does not understand the key, foundational numeracy skills they require to ‘do’ Maths.
If the core issue is addressed, then students are able to understand and work with more complex Maths as they progress through their education.
